Cruise ships keep getting bigger with more people trying to occupy the same spaces. Part of the fun of a cruise is mingling with people from all over the world, but where do you go when you need time to yourself. Here’s some of our recommendations to find the best cruise ship relaxing spots to chill.
Private Balcony
There’s no better place to get away from the crowds then on your own private balcony. Once considered a luxury, most of today’s cruise ships offer affordable balcony accommodations. If you book early enough, you may even be able to snag one of the coveted “special” balcony rooms that can feature more outdoor space, aft-views or even corner wrap-around balconies. If you do get an extra large balcony, ask your room attendant if they can arrange to bring you a lounger (or two) to make your balcony time even more comfortable.
Hidden Decks
Did you know that there are “secret” areas on many cruise ships that are out of the way and not even noticed by the majority of cruisers? Typically found on the extreme forward and aft sections of ships, the structure of the ship actually creates these secluded nooks that many times even have deck chairs waiting for you to enjoy. Getting to these areas can be a mission in itself, as you may need to climb up and down stairs, find hidden doors and if all else fails, ask a crew member. Remember, it’s a secret, so don’t tell anyone …
Adult Retreats
If you’re looking to relax and have the benefit of access to ship services like beverages, towels and maybe even a private pool or hot tubs, then seek out your ships adult retreat. Almost all cruise lines offer these areas that are restricted to guests 18 years or older. Many of these areas are free to use, such as Serenity (Carnival Cruise Line), Solarium (Royal Caribbean), Retreat (Princess Cruises), Spice H2O (Norwegian Cruise Line), Quiet Cove & Satellite Falls (Disney Cruise Line). Additionally, there are other adult-only spaces one some cruise lines where you will need to pay to for access to enhanced features like cabanas, spa services and more plush loungers.
Spa Relaxation Areas
Having a massage or other spa treatment is certain to get you relaxed, but don’t overlook the tranquility of the relaxation areas found within the spa. Almost all cruise lines will include access to the relaxation area when you purchase a spa service. You may also be able to purchase a day-pass or even access for the duration of your cruise. The features vary greatly from ship to ship, but typically you can expect a quiet area with aromatic scents, loungers (possibly heated) and attentive staff. On certain ships, you may also be able to access the thermal suite and water therapy areas. If you think you’d like to have access to these areas throughout your cruise, you may be able to book special spa level accommodations that will include unlimited access to either the relaxation or therapy areas, while also providing you with in-room features such as a unique tranquil decor, upgraded bath amenities and rain-forest shower.
Private Island Oasis
If your cruse calls at a private island, don’t stop at the first beach you find. Instead seek out a spot further away where you’ll enjoy less sand in your face and an overall calmer day. Looking for the ultimate seclusion, many cruise lines now offer private cabana rentals on their private islands. Most of the time these come equipped with plenty of shaded area, upgraded beach loungers, hammocks, beverage fridge and access to a beach butler or concierge. There may even be included access to a premium dining experience on the island.
